My father in law has been inputting some of the family geneology on ancestry.com in the past few weeks. He can trace one of his lines back to the 1700's already! It's pretty neat. And with that site, other family members can go in to view the family tree and add people, stories, or photos. I haven't played around with it too much yet but I'm really glad my father in law has been working on it. It'll be great to have all that information in one place for the kids. And the site does help with the information search.
This isn't exactly geneology . . . but I've started a new project myself lately. Every time the extended family gets together I've been taking a short 1 to 2 minute video of each adult telling a story. I'm not putting any restrictions on the topic - just whatever that person wants to share with future generations. I did this at my niece's birthday party, at our Easter gathering, and then when my uncle came through town and came over for dinner. I've already got several dozen short video clips. It doesn't take a lot of effort. Often people will sit around the table telling stories anyway so I just make it a point to videotape that. Then I keep a log of the video files. People tell stories about when they were a child, or when they took a trip, or just what they have on their mind that day. So my kids and their kids etc will have not just the information and the stories but an actual video of the original person telling the story. Rather than me trying to repeat all the stories I heard when I was a kid. I'm very excited about it!
