I do tend to have to remind my 10 year old (4th grade.) Though he really doesn't have that much. 15 minutes or so of math daily, spelling (get words Monday with a test on Friday) and periodic tests to study for.

He does the math himself unless he is having problems with it and then I will help. I do check it when he is done. I quiz him on the spelling words and review the study guide for tests with him.

I think it really comes down to the particular child. My younger two both start kindergarten next year and I suspect one will sail through school with very little studying and the other will most likely struggle some and have to work at it a lot more. (With more help and more reminding.)
